We rode up FS # 73 to FS #7315 (Suntop Road)to the summit parking lot and the road was in great shape. The MTB trail up from the parking lot at the summit was a huge grind, as usual, but it is rutted from motorcyle use. You can still ride most of it but there will be some hike-a-bike. The trail was also wet so our tires got clogged with the mud/clay soil. Once we broke out of the trees we were able to locate the boot path up to the old viewpoint from before the trail reroute that happened about 10 years ago. It was spectacular! The ride down was clear of any logs but muddy and rutted in some sections from the moto use. Once you crossed the lower road it was more rutted and the switchbacks were filled with duff (i.e. loose dirt thrown up by the motos). Hard to navigate the corners when you could not depend on trail line and stability. Still a great ride...it is Suntop after all!
Skookum was in much better shape, almost ideal conditions, but there was a few blow downs that required getting off the bike to get over. Some muddy areas as well. We had forgotten how technical it is which required a big upper body workout. In our opinions, the quintessential NW MTB ride! 5 hours and two minutes for the whole loop with just over 4k elevation gain.
