Atmospheric River Equals Hero Dirt

At least at the Chelan Butte!

I took the bike over Steven’s Pass early this morning to run from the atmospheric river hoping the East side of the Cascades would be dry or just foggy. Driving from Everett to Chelan, the rain never stopped. The weather forecast predicted a break in the river later in the afternoon, so I got all my family care tasks out of the way first. Around 2:30, the rain stopped and the sun came out. With a sunset coming at 5:45, there was still some time to get ready and get to the trailhead and start climbing. During the climb, I saw a ram and his girlfriend walking together above the road. They both stopped and looked down at me like I was interrupting them. I took a picture of the couple and then I put the phone away. Then in nature’s impulsive, ‘Saturday night fever’, the ram did his dance with his date. We will see the result in 180 days after the snow melts. ;-)

At the summit, the wind gusts were about 30mph!! I pulled out my windbreaker and pants, set up my knee and elbow pads, turned on the GoPro and began the descent. The rain earlier, created a “hero dirt” condition and the downhill was in excellent shape. No puddles and only some loose gravel in spots to keep you on your toes. The run was a blast and I got up to 31 mph at one point. It was my second fastest descent. You can see the video with GoPro data here. I wish I had aimed the camera a little higher for more scenery but there are other vids on pink bike for that. The Trailforks ride log with pictures is available here. In photo number 6, the sun reflected off of building windows on the lake's north shore to create a Tesla emblem. lol
