Klone Peak with my brother

21 | Aug | '16

On a cooler clear day we shuttled to the end of FS Road 6210, which is the top of Chikamin Tie and headed up 1409.1 towards Mad Lake. We stayed on 1409.1, but if you want to add some climbing and southerly views you can turn left at the first intersection and take 1409.2. You can start lower, even from the Alder Ridge TH if you're so inclined, but man you better have some climbing legs. The Chikamin Tie trail is very rutted out from motos and has lots of root steps. That would be a tough climb.

You'll want to make your way towards Mad Lake and when you get to the intersection with 1426, you'll take 1426 then when you get to another intersection you'll take 1425. Eventually you'll come to the turn for the Klone Peak spur trail. It's pretty much all rideable although I walked sections that I was just too tired to pedal through. The view at the top is amazing and you have a 360 degree view. Smoke from the Buck Creek fire was blocking much of the North Cascades, but still beautiful.

We left our drop car at the Chikamin TH, so most of the ride back was downhill except for a small bit of hike a bike up a short section that I'm sure some folks with the legs can power up, but I just don't have that in me. We did stop to splash some water on our faces and refill water bottles (it's clean water, we didn't filter, nor did we get sick).

You can also get to this spot from Maverick Saddle or as the trail guide suggests from the Entiat side, but our route also passes across the huge scree field below Chikamin Ridge which is kind of cool and a serious challenge to see if you can ride across it.

Here's my strava of the route: https://www.strava.com/activities/684471387

And here's the map we used: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5313093.pdf

Note: You'll see signs with markings for the Shetipo Trail, this trail was abandonded by the FS some years ago. It goes down to the Chelan side, but some moto folks we talked to said it's not passable due to the amount of blowdowns.
