Windy Ridge Finishing work! (Teanaway Community Forest)
New trail build: Windy Ridge!
We've started digging the Windy Ridge trail!
Stats/Info:
- 2.2 miles in length
- ~900 feet of descent
- Connects to Upper Big Sandy trail at the top, Rabbit Gulch Rd. at the bottom
- DNR will be placing a bridge over the stream/wetland at the bottom! (if you have ridden the existing trail in the spring, you know what I am talking about).
The Work
The trail is machine-built. Jeff Newman from Tamarack Trailbuilers is manning the machine. We need to hand finish behind the machine:
- Cut any protruding roots.
- Fill in holes
- Outslope the trail when needed
- Create drains where needed
- Finish corners (slope/berm/radius) as needed
Finish work is straightforward and rewarding - and anyone can do it. We will use loppers, rakes and shovels. Bring your own tools or we will provide. No trail building experience is necessary.
Where to Meet
Meet at the paved turnaround at the end of the West Fork Teanaway Rd. There is plenty of parking here and also on the south side of W. Fork Teanaway Rd. We will be driving through the gate approximately 3.3 miles to the work site. The road is not paved and is rough in places. There are water bars that a low-clearance vehicle will scrape on. Higher clearance vehicle is needed (I drive a Toyota Highlander and it makes it no problem). If anyone is not comfortable driving their own car, no problem - we will find a spot for you!
RECOMMEND YOU GET THERE 10-15 MINUTES EARLY to get signed in and ready to go. We will have a quick intro/briefing promptly at 9:30 and then jump into cars and head to the trail.
What to Bring
- Tools if you prefer to use your own. Otherwise we will have tools.
- Sturdy shoes, surfaces will be uneven
- Gloves
- Food and water
- Dress for the weather
The plan will be to be back at the gate "around" 1:30. Because we are going behind a locked gate, we all need to go in and come out together.
