The Kittitas Chapter is excited to invite you to Trail School! 

If you have always wanted to get involved in trail work or wanted to learn the basics of trail work or are a seasoned vet looking to learn new techniques, this class is for you. The class will be taught and the field work will be supervised by members of Evergreen's professional trail staff. This is a great opportunity to learn from the pros!

We especially love to teach new people who have never done trail work before, so don't hesitate to sign up and we will show you the ropes!

Class Curriculum

  • Basic stewardship (Classroom)

    • Stewardship, Conservation, Sustainability

  • Trail construction and soil types (Classroom)

    • Basic trail construction concepts to keep in mind when performing maintenance work.

  • Drainage maintenance (Classroom)

    • Drain types, best practices.

  • Brushing and clearing (Classroom)

    • Tools, best practices

  • Leaf blowing and raking (Classroom)

    • Tools, best practices

  • Basic tool and work safety (Field)

    • Tool types, appropriate usage and body mechanics

  • Trail Maintenance Work (Field)

    • A site is chosen that covers most of the concepts reviewed in the classroom portion


Classroom: Swauk Teanaway Grange, 1361 Ballard Rd W, Cle Elum, WA 98922 (there is plenty of parking here!)

Field: We willl decide the week of the event which trail system to will use for field work. Our preference is the new Big Sandy trail we are building in the Teanaway Community Forest (located just down the road from the Grange), however if road conditions or other factors don't allow us to work on the Big Sandy trail, we will instead work on one of the Towns to Teanaway trails above Cle Elum/Roslyn/Ronald (Rat Pac, Ewok or Brass Monkey). Registered participants will receive notice the week of the event which trail system will be used for field work.

Schedule (please plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can begin on time):

  • 9am - sign in, introductions, plan for the day

  • 9:30am - Begin classroom slideshow presentation

  • 10:30 tool talk

  • 11:30 - Lunch

  • 12:00 - Meet at trailhead talk safety and work plan

  • 12:30pm  - Hike to worksite and begin work

  • 3:30pm - Gather up tools and hike out

  • 4pm - End

What to bring and wear:

  • Wear layers of clothing appropriate for the weather. We work in the rain! Wear sturdy shoes appropriate for muddy, uneven surfaces.
  • We will provide coffee and donuts for the morning class session. You should bring a lunch and any snacks/drinks you want during the day.
  • Gloves
  • We will provide trail tools


You must sign up for this class through the Evergreen calendar. Attendance is limited to 20 people. We welcome signups from anyone outside of Kittitas County, however if the class fills, we will give preference to members of the Kittitas Chapter.
