OROGENESIS - A new way on old ground

Klickitat Trail #7 Stewardship Campout

July 16-17th, Packwood, WA

Home of the Cowlitz, Klickitat, and Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians

Near Packwood, WA a series of gaps along the Orogenesis route total almost 50 miles of gravel and highway riding. In partnership with Evergreen MTB Alliance, Packwood Trails Project, Backcountry Horsemen, and Washington Trails Association we’ve identified some preliminary potential solutions that need groundtruthing, as well as high-priority maintenance work along the Klickitat Trail #7.

Registration required:

(Please have every individual in your group register)

Scope of work

We’ll be working on the 16.5mi Klickitat Trail #7. We’ll start near the west end and work eastward, where the Backcountry Horsemen are working west. In order of priority we will:

  1. Clear the trail of fallen logs (we need certified sawyers!)
  2. Clear the trail of overgrown brush
  3. Correct drainage issues

Helpful tools to bring: Chainsaw with proof of S212 certification, power brusher, hand loppers, Rogue Hoe, McLeod.

No previous experience or tools are required, we’ll go over techniques and tools each morning.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

During the work day Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to work on public lands; this includes a 6-point suspension helmet, eye protection, gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt, and sturdy shoes/boots. The Oregon Timber Trail has a good primer on PPE.

Driving directions

We will be staged near Jackpot Lake at the end of NF20, about 40 minutes south of Packwood and Hwy 12. Driving directions are here. (we’re actually about ½ mile past where google thinks the road ends.)

Car pooling is highly recommended, there's not a lot of space for vehicles.

Logistics

  • Cell service will be unlikely
  • The road in is rough but should be passable by most passenger vehicles. RVs and large vehicles not recommended.
  • You will need plenty of water for working and camping, none is available on site
  • You will need all your own food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Bring sunscreen and insect repellent
  • We’ll all be hiking or riding from camp to the work site. (Sawyers bring a BOB if you have one)
  • Don’t forget to bring: tent, sleeping bag, pad, extra toilet paper, lots of water, food, dishes, and a camp chair.
  • During each day bring a pack with water, snacks, mosquito repellant, and sunscreen. Blister treatment is a great idea too.
