Vashon Island Opens New Mountain Bike Trails in King County’s Dockton Forest!

After years of planning and more than 1,500 hours of dedicated volunteer work, Vashon-Maury Island Residents will finally get to celebrate the opening of new Dockton Park mountain bike trails.

The public is encouraged to attend the Grand Opening celebration Saturday, April 22 at 10am, hosted King County Parks, Vashon Island Mountain Bike Association (VMBA), and Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance (EvergreenMTB).

DocktonBuild400pxConsisting of a beginner and intermediate loop, the new trails bring six descending and two climbing trails to Vashon Island mountain bike enthusiasts—who no longer have to catch a ferry to find trails designed for their sport.

Recognizing the need for sustainable on-island bike trails in 2013, the Vashon Island Stewards organized a group of island mountain bikers (who would later form VMBA) to propose creating a mountain bike-specific trail network on Parks property.

“While it was easy enough for me to take a ferry and meet friends at some of the popular mountain biking destinations such as Duthie Hill, Tiger Mountain or Black Diamond, these places were out of reach for Vashon kids who relied on their parents for rides,” said Larry Dubois, a Vashon Island resident, VMBA board member, and Dockton volunteer.

After submitting their proposal, VMBA received a $75,000 grant from the King County Parks Community Partnerships and Grants Program to build the trails.

VMBA then contracted with EvergreenMTB for support with planning and construction. EvergreenMTB staff trained volunteers how to flag trail, as well as in sustainable trail-building techniques. Those efforts paid off as volunteers were able to help lead much of the trail design and construction.

Vashon-Maury Island’s residents’ ingrained passion for mountain biking is even evident at McMurray Middle School, where students can participate in a mountain biking elective to learn basic skills, safety, and stewardship. The class—taught by Dubois and others since 2009—has served more than 350 students, and helped Dubois recognize the benefit of on-island mountain bike-specific trails.

“I am out in the Dockton forest several times a week and love to watch kids swooping through the trees as I work to maintain the trails,” Dubois now says. “Over the past several months I’ve met a number of riders from off island who have heard of the new trails and are here to explore.”

Today, VMBA continues its mission of enhancing the mountain island’s mountain bike experience through stewardship, education, and advocacy.

Following the 10 a.m. dedication ceremony, guests can take guided rides along the new trails. A free BBQ lunch will be available at noon, and the bike demos and rides will continue until 2 p.m.  Parking is available along 260th or at the parking lot along Dockton Rd. SW
