Evergreen Gets a Hand from Americorps

Last month Evergreen MTB had the opportunity to host an Americorps National Civilian Conservations Corps (NCCC) crew for three weeks.

The 7-person crew, ranging in age from 19 – 25 years old, had spent almost 10 months prior working together on projects ranging from conservation work to assisting homeless populations.

But working with Evergreen was their first introduction to trail work, the mountain bike community—and for most of them it was their first time mountain biking!

Americorps2015rocknet 300pxThe Crew spent a majority of their time working on Tiger Mountain, but also helped out with maintenance at Duthie, and made huge contributions at the 2015 Evergreen Mountain Bike Festival!

Currently nearing the end of their 11–month Americorps commitment, they all mentioned working with the mountain bike community was their favorite experience yet! (We’re not exactly impartial, but considering the fun we have with volunteers at work parties and events, we thought this might be the case).

The Evergreen staff considers itself extremely lucky to have received a crew from this very competitive program—and feels even more fortunate to have had such an extraordinary group to work with. Needless to say we will be applying for more Americorps crews in the future to help Evergreen and Washington State mountain bikers accomplish even more.

The next crew will have some very big boots to fill. We wish all the Americorps members the best as they complete the remainder of their commitment, and invite them to come back and ride with us anytime!
