Summary of Position
Join our team! Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance is seeking a Trail Builder II for the 2025 building season. Trail builders will collaborate closely with public land managers, staff, and volunteers on various trail maintenance and construction projects throughout Washington State.
Position Summary
The primary responsibility of the Trail Builder II (TB II) position is to collaborate with Evergreen staff and volunteers to build and maintain trails at various project sites. This role requires strong skills in trail maintenance and construction, excellent communication abilities, and the capability to organize volunteers to complete trail work projects.
Candidates with experience operating excavators are preferred. Successful applicants should have experience working on trails, whether through volunteering or professional work, with a strong preference for those who possess excavator operation skills.
This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours of work per week. A passion for mountain biking and the outdoors is essential. Work will take place on both weekdays and weekends, and candidates must be prepared to work in all weather conditions.
This is a seasonal position, with the possibility of extension and renewal based on project availability and contracts. Workdays will involve tasks such as trail maintenance, constructing new trails, leading volunteer work parties, and undertaking additional trail-related responsibilities.

The Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance was originally formed over 30 years ago in response to the need for rider advocacy and trails in the Seattle area. Now a statewide organization, we continue to rely on our volunteer trail builders and chapter leaders to deliver our organization's mission and vision, with the administrative team supporting that work.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with Evergreen staff, volunteer site leads, Project Managers, and the local Chapter representative on various trail maintenance activities.
- Work with land managers to understand current trail projects and priorities and to establish work party schedules, logistics, plans, and objectives.
- Ensure work is performed according to objectives and standards outlined in the project scope.
- As needed, communicate work progress and any issues to the site lead and Trail Project Manager.
- Safely motivate and lead crews of volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Ensure hand tools are stocked, organized, and in good working order.
- Administrative duties include updating and maintaining the Team Calendar, reading and responding to emails, and communicating professionally and in a timely manner.
- Help maintain Evergreen’s social media presence within the local riding community to enhance communication and increase volunteer participation at work parties.
- Assisting staff at volunteer work parties with equipment, tools, refreshments, sign-in sheets, and waivers.
- Represent Evergreen and the sport of mountain biking in a positive, professional manner.
- Assist with other responsibilities as needed.
Employment Requirements
- Ability to work hard and stay on task with minimal oversight.
- A strong desire to learn trail maintenance and trail-building skills while maintaining a positive attitude.
- A high level of strength is not necessary, but endurance and fitness are critical.
- Being able to work in cold and wet weather conditions while maintaining good team spirit.
- Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable personal vehicle that can tolerate rough backcountry roads.

As a lean nonprofit organization with a small team, additional duties may be assigned beyond those listed above, according to the organization's needs. Hours are flexible, with evening and weekend work.

Employment Agreement
The Trail Builder II is a part-time, non-exempt position with flexible work hours and the ability to work remotely. This part-time position may require evening and weekend availability and reports to the Trail Program Manager.
Benefits include:
- Fifteen days (120 hours) of accrued personal time off per year.
- Up to $1,500 annual reimbursement for continued education.
- Up to $200 annual reimbursement for personal workwear.
- Mileage reimbursements to worksites across the state and outside of regular non-reimbursable commute travel to the office.

Reports To: Trail Director and coordinates primarily with the Trail Program Manager - Western Washington.
Classification: Non-Exempt. Hourly.
Department: Trail Team
Term: Seasonal – July – November.
Hours: Full-Time, Max 40 hours/week
Compensation: Starting at $22.00- $26.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Employment Agreement Conditions and Duration
This position can be ended at any time, subject to work availability and funding. Due to extenuating circumstances, unpaid days off may be possible. The position description and employment agreement details are subject to change at the discretion of Evergreen Management.
