Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance—the largest single-state mountain bike advocacy nonprofit in the nation, and Washington Student Cycling League—the largest youth cycling organization in the state, announced today they are partnering on a student mentorship program to provide more youth leadership opportunities in Washington state.

The partnership, is a natural fit. With Evergreen focusing on advocacy and education and the League on education and cultivating the next generation of leaders, the collaboration offers a wide range of youth leadership mountain bike opportunities.

In the summer months Evergreen hosts a series of youth mountain bike camps across the state. These camps offer experienced youth the opportunity to improve their leadership and communication skills by mentoring younger riders—all while sharing their love of mountain biking. Prior to the start of the 2017 session, the two organizations will train student mentors and assistant instructors for their summer responsibilities.

“Our camps are a great opportunity for youth who want to pass down their love of the sport to the next generation of riders,” said Dan Bassett, Education and Volunteer Coordinator for Evergreen. “We’re excited to be work with the Washington Student Cycling League and the students to provide this opportunity.”

For League students, most leadership opportunities are presented through their team, facilitated by their coaches, or by serving on the League Student Body Counsel.

“The League has been working on providing more formalized leadership opportunities with outside organizations, and this partnership with Evergreen is the first step,” says Lisa Miller, Executive Director for the League. “Evergreen plays such an important role in our state and we are honored to work them towards a common goal.”
