Duthie Hill: A Land of Eagle Scout Projects

Getting 30 people together for rainy trail work is a tough job; making it fun is even harder. That’s what made Mac Zarling’s recent Eagle Scout project so impressive.

EagleScoutMeeting300px“Mac did a great job keeping everybody happy and motivated,” says Evergreen Trail Crew Lead Ryan Chase “And I was really impressed with his level of professionalism for such a young guy—he did an awesome job communicating and organizing his team.”

Mac was working on his Eagle Scout Service Project—the culmination of an Eagle Scout’s leadership training—which focused on improving Duthie’s popular Boot Camp trail.

Under his supervision, Mac’s team fixed several drainage issues and improved the sustainability of the trail for the tens of thousands of riders who use it each year.

Mac’s efforts are a continuation of a long line of Eagle Scout projects—about 15—that have improved Duthie since its opening in 2008.  Last year alone saw 5 projects from Eagle Scouts that made the mountain biking experience better for everyone who rides the park.

“Their impact is really impressive,” says Chase “there’s always lot of maintenance to be made at Duthie, and the Eagle Scouts are always ready to step up and lend a hand, which makes Duthie better for everyone.”

If you know an Eagle Scout, high school student, or someone else with a community service project who’d like to improve riding at Duthie, contact Craig Brickser.

We’d like to steal Mac’s own words to his work crew to thank all of the Eagle Scouts who’ve contributed their time and effort to Duthie over the years:

“thank all of you so much for coming to Duthie and supporting the Evergreen Bike Alliance. You guys made a huge improvement and allow the community and new bikers to enjoy the outdoors.”

Many thanks to you from the Evergreen Staff!

**There’s been a lot of interest in equipping Duthie with a bike repair stand; if you’d be interested in making this an upcoming community service project, contact Craig Brickser.

Thanks to the Eagle Scouts: Duthie gets a lot of help from the community, and Eagle Scout Candidates are regular contributors.
