May Trail Highlight: Sage Hills

With miles of open flowing hardpack cutting though rolling hills of wild sage, yellow arrowleaf, and purple lupine, May’s trail highlight—Sage Hills—is definitely worth putting on your “must ride in 2015” list.

With relatively few trees and great views, Sage Hills—starting from the town of Wenatchee—offers several different ride options in a single network of multi-use trails.  Consisting predominantly of singletrack with some doubletrack mixed in, most climbs are sustainable and not particularly challenging. But if you’re in the mood for a challenge, set your sights on the top of Twin Peaks and steady yourself for what’s described as “a hardcore climb”.  But don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The ordinary Sage Hill loop clocks in about the 12-mile range (expandable to 20+ miles with the addition of Horse Lake Mountain/Twin Peaks) of narrow singletrack with minimal organic.  While the trail itself is relatively fast and non–technical, it does sprinkle in the occasional hard switchback or steep dip.  With the low seasonal snow back and likelihood of the trail drying out, May is a great time to make a trip to try out this regional favorite.
